I know you've seen tutorials online and especially sellers on Etsy making 100% pure essential oil candles and wax melts. I'm here to give you some information about them.
Essential oils are GREAT. I have a friend on Etsy who sells vegan and natural bath & body (handmadewithlovebykm.etsy.com) and she uses nothing but pure essential oils. Perfect. But she doesn't heat the oils to the high temperatures needed to not only use, but to make candles and wax melts.
I believe EO's have their places to be used. Approved diffusers and in non heated products are wonderful! I am NOT and EO specialist and I'll never claim to be. But after hours of research, I made the decision to not use them in my products.
EO's can and will become toxic if heated. They can also cause adverse side effects if inhaled too long, if they are too concentrated (like in candles,) and did you also know some EO's are not approved for use when you are pregnant, have small children, and can harm pets?!
I made the choice to use candle and all-family approved fragrance oils. Yes, they are chemically made, but I only buy the best. No harmful phthalates will be used and I never use "hobby store" brands. I buy from reputable online suppliers that have documents stating the ingredients AND proof they don't test on animals.
While I do not use pure essential oils in my products, I do have some fragrance oils that contain candle-grade essential oils, which are safe for all ages and family members.
So the next time you want to buy those "natural" EO candles, ask yourself if it's worth it!
